WEMBLEY CUP 2017 - THE third one
Following another huge success of the second Wembley Cup in 2016, EE asked us to come back even bigger, even better and even stronger with Wembley Cup 2017 (Classic!). They wanted to further develop their partnership with Wembley with the launch of their next mobile promotion: PAYG Data boosts.
THE IDEA
Spencer sailed through the final in the 11 goal thriller the year before, he now was chasing his hat-trick. We felt that this year needed a rival team which really gave Spencer a challenge with views and footballing ability. Spencer chose to use his own Hashtag united as his 11 while they watched the F2 Freestylers create their “super squad” through a number of challenges.
How it worked
15 YouTubers fought for a place in the Super Team starting 11. To win those places they had to prove themselves through six ‘Super Tests’; football challenges designed to push their skills to the limit.
The proposition this year was data boosts, from this we created the “boost” challenge which came after the main challenge content. This was an unorthodox penalty taken by a super fan from both teams. Win and bag a EA FIFA Legend. Lose, you walk away with nothing.
The Episodes
Another Twist in the wembley cup?
Spencer has built his Hashtag United team, they’re ready. Has the F2 got what it takes to take down Spencer and his Hashtag11? This episode explains the ins and outs of this years Wembley cup, dialling up the energy and buzz before we get into the action.
innovating striking drills, yet again.
Last year’s Wembley Cup rained goals (11 in total). To find this year’s best finishers we’re using ball dropping drones to test their ability to control, shoot and score.
11 drones drop 11 balls from the air. Players have to get as many as possible into the back of the net. Points for volleys and half points for half volleys.
Keeping it clean
The only aim for a goal keeper and his defence is to leave with a clean sheet. This challenge tests defensive capabilities, where we line the goal mouth with a special fabric that changes colour with impact. We get two teams two battle it out by taking shots at one another.
The team with the cleanest sheet wins.
Light touch (I wanted it to be called Pitch black)
Wembley’s a big pitch so accurate passing can swing a match. To find the best we’re recreating FIFA’s Ground Pass Challenge. But to truly test the player’s vision we’re plunging everything into darkness.
Balls are fired to a player standing in the centre of a ring of randomly illuminating targets. He must hit as many as possible in the time limit.
Best in show
Imagine if the world of Crufts and Football collided and created a football drill for agility and mastery.
The fastest YouTuber around the course wins a place in the F2’s team.
Pulling power
A strength drill to test the men from the boys, testing their shooting while pulling a a player from the rival team.
The player to complete the shooting drill while pulling a YouTuber in the fastest time wins.
Ghost posts
The bright lights and noise of Wembley can be disorientating. Our team will need superb spacial and player awareness to play as one. To test their skills we’re playing Wembley Trebles but to find our most instinctive team players we’ll keep moving the goalposts - literally.
4 teams of 2 shoot at one goal moving between 4 positions. Highest scoring team wins.
The showdown at wembley
Spencer’s Hashtag United go up against the F2’s fully formed influencer super team at the hallowed turf at Wembley in front of 24,000+ fans.
